It’s pretty obvious that harvesting the rainwater that falls on the roofs of building is a very good way to conserve water. Many of us do just that, at home or on allotments, with rainwater butts attached to the downpipe of a shed roof, for instance.

However, this can be done on a much larger scale and Tanks-UK is well placed to help customers design an installation that will maximise collection of this free resource to use for irrigation or other purposes when required.

The customer’s brief:

A large farm building was planned and the customer enquired about installing a rainwater harvest system which could store a quantity of water over the wet periods so that it would be ready to use in the dry season for irrigating crops – in this case orchards and vegetable crops.

Tanks-UK were given the overall size of the roof and the average annual rainfall in the area, plus the available space for location.

The solution:

From the information given, the likely overall required capacity could be worked out. Tanks-UK recommended a line of 6 tanks, each with a capacity of 12,500 litres, giving an overall maximum capacity of 75,000 litres. These would be linked in line.  The tanks were supplied with calmed inlets. These are basically a specially created u-bend towards the bottom of the tank, so that, instead of water pouring into the top of the tank and stirring up any sediment it flows upward. This reduces turbulence and keeps the water cleaner.

Custom requirements

Instead of the standard black or natural tanks, this customer liked the idea of grey tanks to blend in with the colour of the building cladding.  No problem – Tanks-UK were able to produce them in pebble grey, which looks good and in keeping with the overall building, as you can see from the photos.

These particular tanks are the well-known, UK manufactured, Enduramaxx water tanks, which are rotationally moulded in UV stabilised MDPE for many years of use.  We do also supply the Harlequin range of water tanks which are also UK manufactured in MDPE, however the size range is more restricted.
