Whatever type of fuel you need to store, the tank must meet all relevant regulations for oil storage. In this context ‘oil’ would include:

Bulk storage includes non-domestic storage of any of the above, for instance on construction sites, farms, transport depots, rail depots, industrial or commercial premises. We covered larger capacity plastic fuel dispensers in an earlier blog which you can read here. Steel fuel dispensers were discussed in another blog post in July. All of Tanks-UK’s oil / diesel storage tanks, which are also suitable for most other fuels, comply with the relevant regulations. This includes BS799 for static steel tanks, and Oil Pollution Prevention Regulations and Guidelines. In some cases Building Regulations will also apply, but this relates to siting rather than actual tank construction.

For domestic installations the OFTEC regulations will apply, and all installations must be by OFTEC registered engineers.

Further information is available on the Government website: https://www.gov.uk/oil-storage-regulations-and-safety/business

Storage of Petrol for dispensing (i.e. for vehicles and plant) is additionally covered under The Petroleum (Consolidation) Regulations 2014, and a licence is required to store more than 275 litres. In addition, because of the volatile nature of petrol, the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) will apply in all workplaces. More information on this is available from the HSE: https://www.hse.gov.uk/fireandexplosion/dsear-background.htm

Tanks over 3500 litre capacity normally have to be bunded, whether they are steel or plastic. The bund has to be able contain 110% or the tank’s capacity, in order to prevent leakage causing pollution. We can advise you on the best solution for your fuel storage needs according to where you intend to site the tank, or tanks.

Some of the different types of tanks available for bulk fuel storage are:

Single skin plastic or steel tanks

These are available up to 3000 litres (plastic) or 7000 litres (steel), but would need to be situated in an external solid construction bund. Tanks-UK recommend integrally bunded tanks where possible as these provide the greatest protection against leaks causing ground or water pollution.

Plastic bunded oil / fuel tanks

The plastic bunded oil / fuel tanks are available in a range of sizes up to 9250 litres Tanks-UK’s standard range includes tanks from Tungsten, Harlequin – and the Tuffa fire protected range, where Fire or Building Regulations require it.

There are options for plain bunded tanks (e.g. Harlequin HQi tanks); with top outlet (ITT) or bottom outlet (ITE) which can be specified at time of ordering.

Design of tanks needs to be taken into consideration for suitable siting. The plastic bunded oil / fuel tanks are available in Slimline versions in a number of sizes, where the constraints of the site require a narrower tank. Many sizes are also available in a Low Profile version, which is less obtrusive when near buildings, for example. The Vertical tanks are normally circular and are more common in the larger capacities. Beyond 5000 litres the tanks are available with a lockable cabinet for extra security.

Steel bunded oil / fuel tanks

Tanks-UK offer a vast range of sizes and configurations in steel bunded storage tanks. Up to 60,000 litre capacity are available as standard products, and of course steel tanks can be made in custom sizes to suit specific applications.

There are also a range of additional features available as options or ‘add-ons’ for steel tanks, giving you the choice of gauges and fittings.

All of our steel bunded tanks come with a 10 year warranty as a minimum.

UGD2500 2500 Litre Underground Double Walled Oil TankPlastic bunded underground oil tanks

There is a new Harlequin range available which is ideally suited to areas where a ground level tank might be obtrusive, but they are also more secure against oil theft. These tanks come with a 10 year warranty as well.

Steel tanks may also be available for underground siting but this is not usually recommended as plastic tanks are more corrosion resistant and therefore unaffected by damp ground conditions.

Tungsten Plastic in Steel secure fuel tanks

This new product features the best of both materials, having a corrosion-resistant (and lighter weight) plastic inner tank, within a durable steel outer bund tank, with a lockable cabinet. These can be customised with whatever fill points, outlets, gauges, pumps, etc., you require, whether as a direct fuel dispenser or for bulk storage.
